Free Online Courses to Build Digital Skills in Cameroon: A Practical Learning Guide

Digital skills open doors: a better job, freelance work, or simply running your own business more efficiently. The good news is that some of the best training in the world is available online for free, from Microsoft, Google, Cisco and leading universities. The hard part is knowing where to start, and actually finishing.

This guide groups free learning platforms by the skill you want to build, then suggests a learning path and practical tips for studying from Cameroon, where many people learn on a phone with a limited data budget.

Course offers change over time. Everything below offered free learning at the time of writing, but always check the platform's own page for what is currently free and what is paid.

Before you start: free course vs free certificate

Many platforms let you learn for free but charge for a certificate. On Coursera and edX, for example, many courses can be followed in "audit" mode at no cost, while the graded assignments and certificate are paid. Decide what you need: if your goal is the skill itself, auditing is often enough. If an employer asks for proof, look for platforms that issue free certificates or badges, or apply for financial aid where the platform offers it.

Computer and internet basics

• GCF LearnFree offers free, beginner-friendly lessons on using a computer, email, the internet, Microsoft Office and Google tools, plus job-search skills such as writing a CV. It is a good place to start if you are new to computers, or to fill gaps in your knowledge.
• Alison offers free courses on many topics, including IT basics and workplace skills. Learning is free; certificates are paid.

Office and productivity tools

• Microsoft Learn is Microsoft's free training platform, covering Microsoft 365, Excel, Teams, Power Platform and much more, with content available in French as well as English. Its learning paths are also the official preparation for many Microsoft certifications.
• GCF LearnFree (above) has very approachable step-by-step tutorials on Word, Excel and PowerPoint for beginners.

Excel in particular is worth learning well. It is used in almost every office, and solid spreadsheet skills are one of the fastest ways to become more valuable at work.

Graphic design and content creation

• Canva Design School offers free courses and tutorials on design basics, social media graphics, presentations and branding, using Canva's free tools.

A learning path if you are starting from zero

1. Weeks 1–4: foundations. Computer, internet and email basics, then Word and Excel (GCF LearnFree, Microsoft Learn).
2. Weeks 5–8: pick a direction by trying one beginner course in each of design, marketing and coding, and notice which you enjoy.
3. Months 3–6: go deep in one area. Follow a structured path (freeCodeCamp, Google Skillshop, HubSpot Academy or Cisco Networking Academy) and earn its free certificate.
4. Throughout: build proof. Keep a simple portfolio of what you made: designs, websites, a marketing plan, a network you configured in a simulator. Employers and clients trust evidence more than certificates.

Studying on a phone and a limited data budget

• Download lessons on Wi-Fi. Several learning apps, including Coursera's, let you download videos to watch offline later.
