How Much Does a Website Cost in Cameroon? What Affects the Price

Ask three people in Cameroon how much a website costs and you may get three answers that differ several times over. That is not always because someone is overcharging. "A website" can mean a one-page business card or a full online shop with payments, and quotes often include very different things.

This guide explains what drives the price, so you can set a realistic budget, understand what you are paying for, and compare quotes properly. We deliberately avoid quoting fixed prices: they depend on the project and change over time. The factors below are what any honest quote is built from.

1. The type of website

The biggest factor is what the website has to do. From simplest to most complex:

• One-page or simple brochure site: who you are, what you do, how to contact you. A few pages, a contact form and a WhatsApp button.
• Business website: several service pages, an about page, a portfolio, a blog and basic SEO setup.
• Online shop: a product catalogue, cart, checkout, payments such as Mobile Money and cards, and order management.
• Booking or membership site: appointment calendars, client accounts, paid memberships.
• Custom web application: business-specific tools such as client portals, dashboards, quotation systems or internal software.

Each step up adds design work, development, testing and things that can go wrong, and so adds cost.

2. Template or custom design

A site built on a good template is quicker and cheaper. A custom design made around your brand takes longer but sets you apart and fits your content exactly. Many projects sit in between: a solid template, adapted to your colours, fonts and layout needs. Ask which approach a quote assumes.

3. Number of pages and content

More pages means more design, building and checking. Content is often the hidden cost:

• Who writes the text? If the developer writes or edits it, that is extra work.
• Who provides photos? Professional photos of your team, premises and products make a big difference but cost money; stock images are cheaper but generic.
• How many languages? A bilingual French and English site is close to double the content, plus translation and testing.

Content delays are also the most common reason website projects run late, so plan who will deliver it and when.

4. Features and integrations

Each feature adds work. Common examples:

• Client logins and member areas.
• Connections to other software, such as accounting tools, CRMs or delivery services.
• An admin area so your team can update content without a developer.

Make a list of must-have features and nice-to-have features. You can launch with the essentials and add the rest later.

5. Platform: WordPress or custom

6. The costs that come every year

The launch price is not the total cost. Budget every year for:

• Domain name: renewed yearly. A .cm domain is registered through registrars accredited by ANTIC, Cameroon's national agency for information and communication technologies; .com and others through international registrars.
• Hosting: the server where your site lives. Cheap hosting can be slow and unreliable; better hosting costs more but keeps the site fast.
• Professional email on your domain, often through Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, paid per user.
• Licences for paid plugins, themes or fonts, if used.
• Maintenance: updates, security patches, backups and small fixes.
• Payment fees on each online transaction, if you sell online.

Ask every developer for the expected yearly running costs as well as the launch price.

Why the cheapest quote can cost more

A very low quote is tempting, but check what it leaves out. Common surprises include:

• The domain registered in the developer's name, so you do not truly own your web address.
• Pirated themes or plugins that stop working or contain malware.
• No mobile optimisation, so the site loses most visitors on phones.
• No support after launch, so every fix becomes a new invoice or never happens.
• A site so slow or badly built that it has to be redone within a year.

How to set a realistic budget

1. Write down the goal: what should the website achieve for the business in its first year?
2. List the pages and must-have features, and mark nice-to-haves separately.
3. Decide who provides content: text, photos and translations.
4. Add the yearly running costs to the launch budget.
5. Ask for itemised quotes from two or three developers based on the same brief.
6. Keep a margin for changes and small additions you discover during the project.

Put the quotes side by side and check that each covers the same pages, features, content, languages, domain, hosting, training and post-launch support. A higher quote that includes these may be better value than a low one that does not. Ask about anything that is unclear, and get the final agreement in writing with payments tied to milestones.
